Purpose of the catalogue
The SSIIO Public Domain Literature Library exists to make historic works of medicine and public health accessible to modern readers. Each entry combines a bibliographic record with editorial commentary that illuminates the work's content, structure, and historical context. The catalogue does not aim to be exhaustive but rather to offer a curated selection that rewards careful reading.
Scope and selection
All works are taken from Project Gutenberg, a digital library of public-domain texts. The collection currently includes 94 books in four categories: medicine and public health. Selection favors works that have received editorial attention within the catalogue—that is, each work has a dedicated note or guide. SSIIO Catalogue, led by SSIIO Catalogue (Manuscript Reviewer), chooses works that represent diverse periods, authors, and approaches within the broad subject areas.
Source attribution
Every book record identifies the original digital source (Project Gutenberg) and, where applicable, the authors, translators, editors, and illustrators. Links to the original source files are provided via the work's URL. The catalogue does not claim to have verified the texts against print editions; readers should consult the Project Gutenberg files for the definitive electronic version.
Bibliographic records
Each record includes the title, author(s), keywords, target-reader field, and a catalogue note. The target-reader field is based on the content and is not a recommendation for specific audiences. Keywords are drawn from the Project Gutenberg metadata and may not reflect every topic within the work. The catalogue note is an original editorial summary intended to guide reading, not to replace the work itself.
Category assignment
Works are assigned to one of four categories: Medicine, Public Health, Anatomy Physiology, and Nursing Hygiene. The assignment is based on the work's primary emphasis. Some works, such as Benjamin Rush's Medical Inquiries and Observations, could reasonably fit in both. In such cases, the catalogue grouping criteria determines the category, and the catalogue note acknowledges the overlap.
Editorial reading context
Editorial notes are written from the perspective of a careful reader, not a specialist. They highlight structural features, recurring imagery, argumentative strategies, and historical context. The notes do not claim to be definitive interpretations. They are designed to help readers engage with the text on its own terms.
Edition facts and text measurements
Where available, the catalogue notes the edition date (e.g., 3rd edition) and, in some cases, the number of illustrations. The file size and word count are not recorded, but the nature of the work (e.g., manual, treatise, lecture) is indicated. Recommendations and related works
Each category guide includes three recommended books with specific reasons. These Recommendations and groupings use catalogue metadata, thematic relevance, and collection scope. They are not exhaustive. The catalogue also suggests reading paths in the archive section, linking works thematically rather than by chronology or popularity.
